Circuit Breaker Measures In Singapore

Dear Betta Breeders,

With the current COVID situation, many countries are on lock-down of different degrees and in Singapore, we have the Circuit Breaker (CB) which is disallowing hobbyists to travel for non essential matters. Furthermore, pet shops are all closed till further notice.

Many breeders are facing problems of getting fresh live worms as betta fries are picky eaters.

For those that know me, I am against the method often "googled" upon which is the feeding of boiled egg yolk. I find bettas do not accept this and it fouls water very quickly, recently a fellow hobbyist tried this method after discussions and it is working:

1) Scald fresh prawn meat piece in boiling water for 1-3 seconds.
2) "Scar" the meat for easy biting.
3) Dangle the meat on a piece of line/string to catch the fries' attention near the water surface (natural eating area) and with movement.

He had also shared that after this, the fries start to recognise the smell and taste of dead prawn/shrimp and started feeding on frozen brine shrimps.

Happy betta breeding and stay safe!

Cheers! :)

Creative Video about Bettas Jumping

Hi Betta Friends,

Been so long I made a post about bettas, and I feel this deserves a post to remember a great production/video about bettas jumping.

Bettas can be trained to jump off the tank by enticing with food such as bloodworms. However, be careful as they can be complacent and jump off their tanks when you are not aware; so keep those tanks covered or at least have a curved top tank at all times!

You may view the video in the following link or at Bettafanism's facebook page!:

Healthiest Live Food for Bettas

Dear Betta Lovers,

How have you guys been?

Recently, I did a google search on healthiest 'live' food for Bettas and found interesting results. Such as the following:

"
  • Mosquito Larvae. In their natural habitat, the staple food of bettas are mosquito larvae, however, aquarists may have a difficult time securing larvae to feed their bettas. (illegal in Singapore) ...
  • Microworms and Mini-microworms. ...
  • Live Brine Shrimp. ...
  • Daphnia. ...
  • Bloodworms. ...
  • Earthworms.
"

I will be analyzing the above information based on my experience as a Betta Breeder;

Most live, non-poisonous insect larvae will be very nutritious for Bettas because they carry high amounts of protein for muscle growth in Bettas, thus I support the 1st choice of Mosquito Larvae. Sadly, please note it is illegal to have mosquitoes breeding in Singapore as they spread diseases!

For options such as the Microworms, Daphnia and Brine Shrimps; they all carry very good nutritional values but there is a big HOWEVER...

One must note where the food source originates from...

Microworms culture/breed in decomposing oats/cereal, which produces harmful chemicals which I suspect is the root cause for shortened ventrals in fries (the key reason why I discourage and stopped selling them, as I experienced it myself). The culture substance they live in is difficult to filter off.

I loved using Daphnia, as seen in some older posts. Because they really boost the growth of Betta fries and serve as a good side dish for adult Bettas. But do remember that Daphnia culture from dirty waters which often carry harmful bacteria and viruses, which cannot be filtered off by a net. So be very weary of your sources, only get from reliable shops (very difficult for consistency though).

Lastly, Baby Brine Shrimps hatch from eggs in sea-like salt water. Most freshwater bacteria and viruses cannot survive in this salinity, and as salt is dissolved in water, you can easily filter off the saltwater with a fine net and feed your Bettas.

Now, do you see why I promote feeding baby brine shrimps so much? - For BOTH Adult and Baby Bettas!

If you are interested on this food source, here's how to hatch and purchase them:

Once again happy Betta keeping and cheers! Will share some setups soon...

The Best Grade of Baby Brine Shrimp for your Betta Fries

Hey Fellow Betta Hobbyists!

Everyone should know by now I love Bettas as much as anyone of you here, used to breed Bettas by the thousands and "accidentally" became a Betta fry food supplier (baby brine shrimp eggs).

Some may wonder what do I mean by the best grade of baby brine shrimp eggs?

If you look around deep enough, one may find different types of eggs (different colours, sizes and prices) sold by other sellers/brands. But, the species sold by Bettafanism is scientifically the best grade because of its small size; fries may eat them whole instead of just parts, and neutralise risk of choking, as well as having high fat/nutrition content per body weight.

If you are a fan of reading, do check out this article in Google Scholars:
http://www.vliz.be/imisdocs/publications/129248.pdf

It states that there are scientific findings that baby fishes survive better when fed smaller strains of baby brine shrimps; feel free order yours now if you are embarking on Betta breeding journey!:

Joy of Feeding

Hi Betta Breeders!

Had to share this video I found in Youtube (not mine), one of the greatest joy of breeding bettas would be watching them gobble on freshly hatched baby brine shrimps; and you know they are digesting the shrimps when you see the roundish, orangey bellies!

There are different kinds of baby brine shrimps (and their eggs) and Bettafanism sells the highest grade (click here!), which is highly nutritious and easily digested by fries. Other grades may choke baby bettas or are simply lower in nutrition and result in slower growth rate.

Also taking the chance to update that you may pay for Bettafanism's Premium Baby Brine Shrimp eggs (with free delivery!) with PayNow or PayLah (90283379), hope this makes payments even more convenient!

Cheerios!

Hi Crowntail Fanatics,

Arising from today's facebook post on a King Crowntail (KCT) display (image from Google) here ; I realise many of you, including myself, simply have an overwhelming passion for the cool and stunning KCT!

As per mentioned in the post, KCTs can be rather difficult to maintain though; because of its delicate rays.

Hence, here's a tip based on my crowntail keeping experience. Other than the basic betta care, KCTs require thick ketapang waters! The water has to be this brown for them to thrive:

And how do I get my ketapang extract? For the safest and most consistent extract, details can be found in my past post.

This little tip goes a long way, happy crowntail keeping!

Cheers! :)

PH Problem

Hello Betta Keepers,

Recently, a friend told me his tap water (North East) measured to be PH 8! So out of concern, I would like to share with everyone my water routine in the past when I am keeping a few thousands of bettas at any point of time.

Bettas thrive (and usually breed) in acidic waters around PH 6-7. Hence, I had always kept my waters around PH 6.5.

I do this via means that are as natural as possible; Ketapang Leaves.

In Singapore, you can pick dried and fallen leaves from the tree itself, usually found along coastal areas. To use, simply boil them and use the extract (killing germs than just putting into the tank).

Take special note of the tree's horizontal layers of leaves, and the shape of the leaves itself; they are rather distinct from the average leaves we see.

Pictures are not mine:

However, after a few years, I find picked leaves a tad too risky as they do bring in diseases like fungi despite boiling (you may get insect bites too!). Therefore, I changed my routine and started purchasing Miracle Tea Bag (see image below). These are very concentrated and I trust Ocean-free, being established, should have sterilized the leaves before packing.

For years, I did not incur fungi problems with my fishes, so this is highly recommended!

Remember not to overdose and always introduce PH changes gradually, a sudden PH change of >0,5 can kill even the toughest betta.

Hope this helps raise some awareness, happy Betta Keeping!

Betta Genetics

Hello Betta Enthusiasts,

Recently, I was queries about the genetics on bettas. Frankly, dealing with such colourful species of fish, I always advise to either go for the adventurous fancy, or stick to a certain solid colour; such as my favourite Platinium White x Platinium White.

However, certain solid colours can be very fun to breed with, such as the classic Blues!

Credit: http://www.bettaterritory.nl/BT-AABcolorgenetics.htm

This is because just by crossing different kinds of blues, you are able to get either Steel Blue, Turquoise or Royal Blue (favourite), refer to the genetics table above to get what I mean!

I had successfully bred around 10+ spawns of blue during my course of Betta Keeping, and it is easy to know why RB is my favourite; just crossing a pair will usually get you 3 different tones of blue, very rewarding feeling for every breeder!

I hope I answered all of you aspiring Blue Betta Breeders' questions, so do get those tanks ready and start breeding...

With Bettafanism's freshest and premium BBS eggs of course! :p

Betta Fries CAN feed on Baby Brime Shrimps!

Hello Betta World,

Over the past few years of selling Baby Brime Shrimp Eggs (BBS Eggs), I received many enquires on whether newly hatched Betta Fries are able to feed on BBS or not.

So here's a post to address the answer so new breeders can comfortably dive into this hobby: YES!

Take the time to read Bettafanism's Spawning/Breeding Guide, a brief summary of the feeding program for your fries will be:

Hatched to Day 2-3: No feeding, fries feed on yolk sac.

Day 3 to Day 15-20: Baby Brime Shrimp feeding! (Cleanest and most nutritious fry food based on 10+ years of experience)

Day 20 to Day 60: Tubifex Worms

Day 60 to Day 90: Tubifex Worms, Pellets, Bloodworms; they are young adults now.

This post should help you out there, no microworms or daphnia will be required!

Cheers! :)

Just to "infect" more of you to join this fun and rewarding experience, I will be sharing random pictures of my spawns in the past. I had been breeding countless spawns for the past 10 years plus and hence, I am able to declare baby brime shrimps (BBS) as the best fry food, as well as produce certain guides to help hobbyists out there such as the lazy BBS egg hatching.

Mobile: Guides are on the drop-down box on the top.
Website: Guides are on the list on the right.

Clearing of Late (But good) Developers from King Crowntail Spawn

Hi bros/sis,

As per the title, I have a handful of remainders from this spawn. Thanks for all the support grabbing the bigger siblings as always, appreciate it, hope you guys are developing them well. They should grow out fine due to the strong genetics background.

The late developers will be selling at 3 for $10. However, as per my White Platinum Spawn, late does not mean bad. They will still grow out fine just that they are losing out in the food battle with their siblings when juvenile.

Here's a tip for all Crowntail keepers, always add Blackwater Essence/Extract and only change 50% of the water per water change, this will keep their rays strong and thick!

Please click into my stocklist link on the right side of this page or the scroll list on the top if you are using your mobile. Happy crowntail keeping! or Click here!

Last White Knight Standing

Hi White Betta Lovers,

I've always wondered why don't we call White Platinums as White Knights? Since they are white and shiny with irids like like armour across the body, unlike White Opaques (Chalky White).

Anyway these are just names, as long as you like the fish, you can name it whatever you wish.

As most of you have gotten White Platinum Halfmoon Plakats from me over the month, I hope most of them turned out awesome. This line is very good (I always use high quality pairs in my spawn) and hence, even the last male I have (supposingly rejected by all previous viewers due to late development) shows this form.

He's in the community tank all along but no one chose him, so I jarred him for 3 days and groomed him, atlas, here's a video to share, quite a cute small fellow:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PS_NsZIquKo

Thus, a good guide for breeders out there who loves to groom them alot (like myself), always use strong lines - Meaning parents that you know are from breeders of winning lines or most of the spawn have good features and so on, so the genetics is in place.

PS: This male will be for sale, although I am tempted to keep him. Please refer to stocklist.

Cheers! :)

Will there be a King amongst the Princes?

Hi Crowntail Lovers out there,

Here's my next project, a King Crowntail Father mated with a cross-ray spawn Crowntail Female; Both are Black Orchids.

For beginners, King Crowntails or KCT are Crowntails with the tip of their finnages (rays) crossed against other set of rays. The female is from Indonesia while I believe the male is from Thailand.

Check out the father (rays are thinner due to age, spawned at about est 6-12 months old age)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XysZN0g_4yY

You can see that he is definitely a champ at prime!

The female is no less of a beauty:

And from here, you may learn of the term Black Orchid; Whereby the background colour is black and the body's rays and scales are of grey/white base and outlined black. On some cases, Black Orchids may have scales that are blue or green.

Here's an update and I hope to yield many beauties from this! Reason why I want to clear my whites fast, kinda look forward to this spawn!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S40zRL1_R_I

PS: White Platinum HMPK Juniors are selling like hotcakes, left a few more selling cheaply at $5-10 as I don't really wish to cull yet. Watch them here:
